It's In The Water

What’s floating around in the ocean isn’t just fish. Plastic is everywhere and we need to do something about it. We are hosting an exhibit called It’s In The Water and we are calling on you to help. What do you think we should do to help our oceans and how does that look? You can submit a drawing, a collage, or even a poem. You are the artist. Your artwork will be part of our Earth Day exhibit.

You can email your artwork to us at info@scrapgallery.org or mail it to us at 68743 Perez Road D-16, Cathedral City, CA 92234. We will premiere this exhibit on April 22, 2021 so the sooner we get the artwork, the better.

The Quest for Peace and Justice Exhibit

On January 18, 2021, we honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also, on this National Day of Service, we realize the importance of working together, hand in hand, to make lives better in our communities, our country, and around the world. 

In this effort, middle and high school students have created The Quest for Truth and Justice exhibition. For this exhibit, students were encouraged to reflect upon King's 1964 acceptance speech, "The Quest for Peace and Justice," as he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent resistance to racial prejudice in America. Art is a powerful tool, and in the hands of these students, it expresses, educates, and reveals our shared struggles, hopes, and dreams.

How Much Waste Do You Generate?

Do you know how much trash you are making at home? Well, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American generates 4.51 pounds of waste per day. Of that daily average, plastics are a rapidly growing segment of municipal solid waste (MSW). Think about all the wrap, containers, things and stuff that you toss around the house. So how much do you really generate? Let’s find out and let’s do something to lessen our impact.

We are asking you to join our Citizen Science project about trash and plastic waste by conducting a Household Waste Audit. It’s easy, albeit a little messy, but you can make a difference. Instructions and resources are right here. When you finish your audit, send us your data and let us know what you will do next to help the planet.

Starting on Monday, December 21 we will have these FREE kits available for curbside pickups from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of our Masked Monday program. Well, we do believe in magic here at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery because without the help of many elves, our work would not get done! To honor all those elves, we have created a special hands-on kit full of activities for you to take and make. It’s also filled with materials for you to reuse and repurpose (It’s kind of our thing here). So you can stop by S.C.R.A.P. Gallery every Monday from 8-noon or we have some other stops in Cathedral City including Nicolino’s Italian Restaurant and Tortillas. These kits are free and can be picked up curbside.

Pick Up It Up For International Coastal Cleanup Month

For the month of September, people around the globe are joining together to bring awareness about ocean pollution and their picking that trash up too.

Even though you may not live close to a coastline, what you do with your trash has an effect, but you can do something about it from your own home. Join the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery as we partner with the 5 Gyres Ambassadors’ TrashBlitz.  Do a Home Audit. It’s easy and it helps the 5 Gyres Institute fight ocean plastic pollution.

Gratitude Project - Giving Back On September 11

September 11th is Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day Americans across the country are called to volunteer in their local communities in tribute to the individuals lost and injured in the attacks, first responders, and the many who have risen in service to defend freedom.

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful; a readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Let our essential workers and first responders know we care with cards, artwork and messages of gratitude. Create an illustration, photo, drawing, or graphic that will be delivered to members of our community. Use whatever materials you have around the house.

Pledge to make plastic a thing of the past!

Every July, over a million people around the world participate in Plastic Free July, a challenge to refuse single-use plastics for one whole month. If you can do it for just one month, you can do it for two months and then three months and so on and so on.

Why? Avoiding plastic for any amount of time is a great thing to do – but that alone won’t end our addiction to plastic. When individuals choose not to buy or use plastic, they remove plastic from their lives. But what we really need is to eliminate problematic plastic, specifically single-use plastics. Single-use plastics are goods that are made primarily from fossil fuel–based chemicals (petrochemicals) and are meant to be disposed of right after use. To do that, we need to work together to push communities, companies, and countries to go plastic free.

Plastic Free July - Step Up To The Plate!

Eight million tons of plastic end up in our ocean every year. The plastic breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics which are small enough to enter our food chain. Is that something you want on your plate? Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the plastic pollution solution. As part of our month-long, fact finding mission into all that is plastic, we are kicking things off with
a virtual exhibition called Step Up To The Plate where you show us what's eating at you about plastic? What can you do? What's on your plate?  Use our blank plate template or create your own. Email us a photo of your completed plate to karen@scrapgallery.org.

Masked Mondays

We are excited to announce our curbside service starting in July. Every Monday from 8 to 11 a.m., drop by the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery and pick up one of our Ready-To-Go Recycle, Camp S.C.R.A.P. or Surprise kits. Wear your mask for safety and show us your Superhero for the Environment status. One kit per person. Kits are free, but donations are always appreciated.
